The commemorative coin is dedicated to one of the oldest actively operating scientific, educational and cultural institutions of Ukraine. Therein for the first time the geographic coordinates of Kyiv were precisely determined, and in the period of 1845-1884, before the Greenwich Meridian was chosen as the zero-longitude reference line, the Kyiv Meridian passed thereat.

On the obverse there are depicted: the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine and the semicircular inscription НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine) (above); the observatory building erected after the plans of V.Beretti together with the pavilion through which the Kyiv Meridian passed; thereunder there are the inscriptions АСТРОНОМІЧНА ОБСЕРВАТОРІЯ / КИЇВСЬКОГО НАЦІОНАЛЬНОГО / УНІВЕРСИТЕТУ / ІМЕНІ ТАРАСА ШЕВЧЕНКА, 5 ГРИВЕНЬ/2010 (Astronomical Observatory / of the Kyiv National / University / named after Taras Shevchenko, 5 hryvnias / 2010) and the logotype of the National Bank of Ukraine Mint (to the right).
On the reverse there are depicted: a unique specimen of the astronomical equipment, i.e. the meridian circle installed in 1872; conventionalized night sky and the semicircular legend to the left КИЇВСЬКИЙ МЕРИДІАН - 1845 (Kyiv Meridian - 1845).
