The commemorative coin is dedicated to one of the oldest scientific research institutions of our country - the Nikitsky Botanical Garden that was founded in 1812 on the Cape Martian close to Yalta. The Garden is a unique collection of the local and world flora, a paragon of the landscape architecture, a sui generis museum under the open sky with about 20 thousand species of plants from different areas of the globe.

On the obverse of the coin: above there is the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine with the semicircular inscription НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine); in the centre, against the background of a conventionalized ornamental pattern of flowers and leaves, there is a portrait bust of the founder and first director of the garden with indication of his name thereunder ХРИСТІАН СТЕВЕН (Christian Steven); below there are the coin issue year indication 2012 and the crescent-like legend -П`ЯТЬ ГРИВЕНЬ (five hryvnias) on the white copper one. On the latter, to the left, there is the National Bank of Ukraine Mint logo.
On the reverse of the coin there are depicted: a pond with a fountain in the middle; against the background of waterscape, in the middle distance, a garden part with a pavilion; against the background of the pond below - the legend НІКІТСЬКИЙ / БОТАНІЧНИЙ САД / 1812-2012 (Nikitsky / Botanical Garden / 1812-2012).
