Announcement: Open Research Seminar on the sensitivity of CIS countries to foreign output and oil price shocks

On 6 July 2018, a traditional open research seminar will take place in the National Bank of Ukraine. The NBU researcher Oleksandr Faryna will present his joint research on “The Transmission of International Shocks to CIS Economies: A Global VAR Approach” co-authored with Heli Simola form the Bank of Finland Institute of Economies in Transition (BOFIT).

 

In their paper, the authors explore the sensitivity of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to foreign output and oil price shocks within a large-scale Global Vector Autoregressive model, which comprises 30 world economies and allows the capture of important cross-country spillovers. During the seminar, Oleksandr Faryna will discuss obtained results with a particular focus on how the sensitivity of the CIS region to foreign shocks have evolved over past couple of decades as trade and financial linkages across countries experiences notable changes.

 

Oleksandr Faryna is a researcher of the NBU’s research unit at the Department of Monetary Policy and Economic Analysis. He holds PhD from the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” and has a considerable experience in international research and educational programs. For instance, Oleksandr Faryna was a visiting researcher in BOFIT, Bank of Finland. His research interests cover a wide range of topics in macroeconomics, monetary economies, international economics, and applications of big data to macroeconomics.

 

The seminar’s working language will be English.

 

Seminar venue: room 206, 9, Instytutska St., Kyiv. The venue can be accessed via the central entrance.

 

The seminar starts at 2 p.m. Registration of participants will take place from 1.45 p.m. to 1.55 p.m. To be admitted into the NBU, which is a restricted access facility, you must show your ID.

 

In order to participate in the seminar, please submit an application stating your forename, surname, place of employment, and contact details (telephone, e-mail) to research@bank.gov.ua. The application deadline is 4 p.m. on 5 July 2018. Given the limited number of available seats, the NBU reserves the right to accept or reject applications. Each participant will receive an email saying whether their application has been accepted or rejected.

 

The NBU invites researchers to present findings of their studies on issues related to the NBU’s activities and the operation of the financial system at the NBU’s research seminars. Email your proposals (stating a desired seminar date, presentation materials, an executive summary and/or draft contributions) to the NBU Research Division of the Monetary Policy and Economic Analysis Department (email: research@bank.gov.ua).

The NBU launched open research seminars in July 2015. These seminars provide an opportunity to the representatives of the academic and expert community, international financial institutions, other central banks, and the NBU to share their research findings, and to discuss them with their peers.
