Best Coin of the Year Contest Starts on 1 February 2019

Tomorrow starts the first stage of the Best Coin of the Year annual contest (hereinafter - the competition) among commemorative coins that were officially put into circulation from 1 January to 31 December 2018.

 

This year the NBU has changed the rules, for the first time in the competition history. From now on, three coins  that will receive the largest number of votes will be awarded in each of the two nominations (previously, there were three nominations):

 

      Best coin of the year category will assess whether the coin can be called the coin of the year taking into consideration the chosen theme, artistic level of execution, design, sculptural embodiment, applied technology.

 

      Best explored theme category will assess the general concept of the coin, its originality, artistic decision and successful exploration of the theme dedicated to a personality, some events, an institution, etc.

 

Such changes in the rules of the contest will help identify more accurately the most interesting and popular themes among consumers, as well as attract general public’s attention to the plastic art, state-building ideas and goals.

 

The following artists who designed commemorative coins in 2018 will compete for  the best coins’ author award: Liubov Androschuk, Volodymyr Demianenko, Sviatoslav Ivanenko, Mykola Kochubei, Maryna Kuts, Natalia Fandikova and ArtTrium, a group of artists:  Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk and Serhii Kharuk.

 

The contest will take place in two stages.

 

Your can give your vote for the best coins during the first stage of the competition from 1 February to 1 April 2019 in one of the following ways:

·        fill in an online questionnaire (Ukr) on the NBU’s official web-site

·        send a completed questionnaire (pdf and docx) at moneta@bank.gov.ua

·        put the completed questionnaire in a special box at regional Cash Circulation Divisions, Cash Operations and Sale of Numismatic Products Division of the NBU Cash Circulation Department, and distributing banks (Oschadbank, Ukrgasbank).

 

One and the same coin can be assigned to only one nomination.

 

At the second stage, members of the special commission (which will include NBU specialists, experts in fine arts, history, numismatics, authorized representatives of distributing banks and the Association of Numismatists and Collectors of Ukraine) will vote on the winner in each category by secret ballot.

 

The results of each stage will be published on the NBU official web-site.

The contest, which has already become traditional in Ukraine, was launched in 2005.

      in the Best Artistic Solution nomination - Kosiv Painting Style (silver, face value - 10 hryvnias; nickel silver, face value - 5 hryvnias), designers: Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, Serhii Kharuk; engraver: Volodymyr Atamanchuk.
