The National Bank of Ukraine, for the first time in its history, joined the international campaign called the International Museum Day, by opening its doors today for a free visit. This day, May 18, most museums in the world from over 140 countries offer free admission and happy to show their exhibition halls.
Following the philosophy of informational openness and transparency, the National Bank of Ukraine has recently introduced open online inscription for excursions to the Money Museum, because during the years of museum operation, from 2004 to 2015, access to it was restricted. The Money Museum is founded on 24 March 2004, its funds which have been actively formed since the early 80s of last century, today have more than 13000 pieces, including more than 8 000 of numismatic and bonistic pieces. The visitors will be able to see the comprehensive collection of commemorative coins of Ukraine issued into circulation by the National Bank of Ukraine.
According to the Money Museum director, Nataliia Hordiienko, the NBU Money Museumis the only museum institution of the state possessing, which has a comprehensive collection of jubilee and commemorative coins of Ukraine. “The Money Museum has always tried to be open to the public. During its operation the museum received more than 16 thousand students of schools, colleges and higher education institutions, officials and diplomats, military men, retired elders and disabled persons”, she said and noted that “many educational institutions of Ukraine have established a good tradition: to visit our museum every new academic year”.
Nataliia Hordiienko said that formerly only the organized groups could visit the Money museum, but in April of this year new form of museum visiting was introduced - the registration of visitors on the NBU website. Now anyone can choose a convenient time and enroll themselves on a tour to get acquainted with the exposition of the Money Museum devoted to the money circulation in Ukraine from ancient times till present. The museum exhibition pieces trace the history of hryvnia from counting weighing unit of IX century and currency unit in a form of silver bullion of ХІ – ХІІІ centuries to first hryvnias of the Ukrainian National Republic (1917 – 1920) and present money.
