Description of security features
The banknote is printed on the special tinted paper of light olive color which is the dominant color of the images on the banknote.
1. The multitone watermark – a portrait of Ivan Franko – is a copy of the portrait printed on the front side of the banknote. The image is placed locally at the left edge of the front side of the banknote and is visible when the banknote is held up to the light.
2. The vertical denomination figures are also visible as the light tones of the watermark (placed in the lower right part of the multitone watermark). The image is visible when the banknote is held up to the light.
3. The security thread is a polymer thread completely embedded in the paper and visible to the right of Ivan Franko’s portrait when the front of the banknote is held against the light. The depictions “20 ГРН” (UAH 20), a trident, and numerical indication of the denomination “20” in two lines are visible through a magnifier (normal and reverse image) when the banknote is held up to the light.
4. The optically variable element is a stylized image of a flower depicted to the right of Ivan Franko’s portrait. When the banknote is tilted the flower image changes color from magenta to olive green.
5. Embossed elements are elements of images that are rough to the touch. They are present only on the front side of the banknote (portrait, inscriptions, numerical indication of the denomination, microtexts).
For reliable manual detection of the banknote’s authenticity certain elements have a raised relief – the numerical indication “20” of the denomination in the lower left part of the banknote; horizontal strokes in two lower corners of the banknote; Ukraine's small coat of arms and inscriptions “УКРАЇНА” (Ukraine), “НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ” (the National Bank of Ukraine), “Двадцять ГРИВЕНЬ” (Twenty HRYVNIAS).
6. The element for visually impaired people is an embossed deep olive triangular element meant for identification of the banknote’s denomination and is located in the lower left corner on the front side of the banknote.
7. The latent image is the numerical indication “20” of denomination hidden in the bicolor ornament located in the center of the right edge of the banknote. When the banknote is tilted to the light source at an acute angle at the eye level the denomination numerals become visible and are dark against the light background if looked at from the long side or light against the dark background if looked at from the short side.
8. The see-through element (a compound image) is the image where all the elements of the denomination numerals complete each other and form the full image when the banknote is seen against a light source. The fragments of the image are located in the top left corner on the front side of the banknote and in the top right corner on the reverse side of the banknote.
9. The microtext is a repeated inscription that can be read only through a magnifying glass.
The microtexts on the front side are the following:
the inscription “УКРАЇНА” (Ukraine) in intaglio printing in negative microtext that is repeated four times and restrains the ornament with the latent image on the left
the inscription “ДВАДЦЯТЬ ГРИВЕНЬ” (twenty hryvnias) in intaglio printing in positive microtext that is repeated and restrains Ivan Franko’s portrait below
the inscription “НБУ” (the NBU) in offset printing in positive microtext with different thickness of strokes; the microtext creates the background in the top right corner of the banknote
the inscription “20 ГРИВЕНЬ” (20 hryvnias) in offset printing in positive microtext that is repeated and located along the right edge of the banknote.
The microtexts on the reverse side are the following:
the inscription “УКРАЇНА” (Ukraine) in positive microtext that is repeated and forms one of the wavy lines of the background composition in Orloff printing
the numerical inscription “20” of the denomination in negative microtext that is repeated and fills one of the elements in the lower right part of the background composition in Orloff printing
the inscription “НБУ” (the NBU) in positive microtext that is repeated and forms a horizontal line in the image of the Lviv Opera House.
10. The Orloff printing is a special type of printing that ensures the abrupt transition of one color into another without ruptures and displacements of the image elements.
On the front side of the banknote, it is the numerical inscription “20” of the denomination that is located in the lower left corner of the banknote and the ornament with the latent image.
On the reverse side of the banknote, it is the background elements: copy-evident and background patterns, geometric elements in the banknote’s corners.
11. The rainbow printing is a special type of printing that ensures the gradual transition of one color into another without ruptures and displacements of the image elements. On the front side, it is the color transition from left to right in the background composition in the right part of the banknote; on the reverse side, it is the color transition from the center to the edges in the image of the Lviv Opera House and from left to right in the fragments of the background art composition.
12. The copy-evident pattern is an image consisting of thin lines that form a moire pattern when copied or scanned. Located on both sides of the banknote.
Besides the visual security features, the banknote also has security features detectable in UV and IR rays and possesses magnetic properties.
To user attention! If a banknote has no or insufficient security features or if these features are inconsistent with the said requirements, the banknote should be submitted to the Cash Circulation Department of the National Bank of Ukraine or to the National Police.
