1,000-Hryvnia Banknote in Circulation

1,000-Hryvnia Banknote in Circulation

On 25 October 2019, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) introduced into circulation the 1,000 hryvnia banknote.

“Starting today banks will receive the notes from the NBU and distribute to customers,” noted Yakiv Smolii, the NBU Governor. “This banknote is a legal means of payment in Ukraine, it can be used for payments in retail stores or be deposited in a bank.”

Benefits

According to the NBU Governor, key benefits of introducing the new banknote of 1,000 hryvnias in circulation are streamlining settlements and reducing costs on production and processing of banknotes.

  1. Convenience

The 1,000-hryvnia banknote will partly replace in circulation 100, 200, and 500 banknotes. The new banknote will reduce the average number of banknotes usually carried in a wallet, and simplify settlements and savings.

  1. Feasibility

Last time the highest denomination banknote of 500 hryvnias was introduced in circulation 13 year ago. However, income of Ukrainians grows, prices change and according to desktop studies applied by central banks in order to decide the best banknote and coin denominations, a higher denomination banknote than 500 hryvnias is required for standard cash circulation in Ukraine.

  1. Reducing costs to the state and business

Costs to the state and business on producing and processing banknotes will decrease.

Security features and design

The new banknote incorporates top-notch design and security technologies.

“The 1,000-hryvnia banknote is the highest denomination of hryvnia at present,” noted Yakiv Smolii. “For that reason it is well-secured. The banknote incorporates over 20 state-of-the-art security features to prevent counterfeiting, including two cutting-edge optically variable elements. Anyone can check its authenticity.”

If you tilt the banknote, the high-tech security feature becomes easily visible: the SPARK optically variable element in the form of a flower-crystal that changes color from gold to jade green and vice versa.

Another innovative security feature is the window security thread. This partly woven purple polymer strip contains the digits representing the banknote’s face value and the trident, the small coat of arms of Ukraine. When tilted at different angles, the thread produces a dynamic light effect – the background image moves in a different direction.

Historical figure

The front of the banknote features a portrait of Volodymyr Vernadskyi, who was a renowned scholar and one of the founders and the first president of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences established in 1918.

He was selected for his tremendous contribution to the history of Ukraine as a philosopher, naturalist and the founder of new scientific disciplines (geochemistry, biochemistry and radiogeology).

The building of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is at the back of the banknote.

For reference:

The design of the 1,000-hryvnia banknote is similar to the designs of the upgraded 20-, 100- and 500-hryvnia banknotes.

The color and size of the banknote make it easily distinguishable from other denominations, which helps users recognize the denomination. The dimensions of the new banknote are 75 mm by 160 mm. The main color is blue.
