NBU Leaders Met FGR Bundestag Deputies

Valeria Gontareva, the NBU Governor, met with representatives of the Committee on the Affairs of the European Union, the German Bundestag. The event was also attended by Vladyslav Rashkovan, NBU Deputy Governor, and Dr. Christof Weil, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Ukraine.

The leaders of the Ukrainian central bank discussed financial sector reforms, NBU restructuring, and its institutional independence with the German delegation.

According to Ms Gontareva, the NBU’s strategic priority is to become a modern central bank and, in the future, a member of the European System of Central Banks. The Ukrainian regulator’s large-scale transformation is aimed at that priority. Ms Gontareva also stressed that the only way acheive institutional independence, apart from the conditions created for this purpose de jure and de facto, is through the presence of technocratic leaders within the organization.

The meeting participants also discussed Ukraine’s development this year, namely the behavior of foreign markets for Ukrainian exports, structural economic reforms, competition, and the potential threat of political instability.

Ukrainian and German parties also noted that it is critically important to adhere to the rule of law and to have an effective mechanism to enforce the protection of creditors’ and investors’ rights in order to increase German investments in Ukraine.
