The National Bank of Ukraine has Decided on the Finalists of the First Stage of the Best Coin of the Year Competition

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has Decided on the Finalists of the First Stage of the Best Coin of the Year Competition (hereinafter referred to as the "Competition").

The three coins were selected in each category ("Best Coin of the Year", "Unique Concept" and "Successful Artistic Solution") that received the most votes.

Thus, during the first stage of the Competition the following coins received the most votes:

In the Best Coin of the Year category:

  • Kosiv Painting Style (silver, face value - 10 hryvnias; nickel silver, face value - 5 hryvnias), designers: Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, Serhii Kharuk; engraver: Volodymyr Atamanchuk (16.45%);
  • The Wheel of Life (silver, face value - 10 hryvnias), designers: Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, Serhii Kharuk; engraver: VolodymyrDemianenko; computer-aided design by Vitalii Andriianov (12.24%);
  • The Marbled Polecat (silver, face value - 10 hryvnias; nickel silver, face value - 2 hryvnias), designers: Volodymyr Demianenko, NataliiaFandikova; engravers: Volodymyr Demianenko, Sviatoslav Ivanenko (9.72%).

In the Unique Concept category:

  • Kosiv Painting Style (silver, face value - 10 hryvnias; nickel silver, face value - 5 hryvnias), designers: Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, Serhii Kharuk; engraver: Volodymyr Atamanchuk (12.27%);
  • The Wheel of Life (silver, face value - 10 hryvnias), designers: Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, Serhii Kharuk; engraver: VolodymyrDemianenko; computer-aided design by Vitalii Andriianov (11.45%);
  • 100th Anniversary of the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1921 (nickel silver, face value - 5 hryvnias), designers: Volodymyr Taran, OleksandrKharuk, Serhii Kharuk; engravers: Volodymyr Demianenko, Volodymyr Atamanchuk (10.87%).

In the Best Artistic Solution category:

  • Kosiv Painting Style (silver, face value - 10 hryvnias; nickel silver, face value - 5 hryvnias), designers: Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, Serhii Kharuk; engraver: Volodymyr Atamanchuk (20.17%);
  • The Wheel of Life (silver, face value - 10 hryvnias), designers: Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, Serhii Kharuk; engraver: VolodymyrDemianenko; computer-aided design by Vitalii Andriianov (9.23%);
  • 500 Years since the Beginning of the Reformation (nickel silver, face value - 5 hryvnias), designers: Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, Serhii Kharuk; engraver: Volodymyr Atamanchuk; computer-aided design: Vitalii Andriianov (8.85%).

Ukrainians also actively voted for the following coins: Eurovision Song Contest 2017 (nickel silver), Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle (silver, nickel silver),St. Catherine’s Church in Chernihiv (silver, nickel silver), 150 Years since the Establishment of the Taras Shevchenko National Opera of Ukraine(silver, nickel silver), 100 Years since the Launch of the First Kurultai of the Crimean Tatar People (nickel silver), The Lion (silver). Regretfully, under the Competition rules, these coins failed to qualify for the second stage of the Competition.

Over five thousand people voted in the competition.

The most question forms were filed to special boxes installed on the premises of distributing banks of the NBU (45%) and the NBU regional offices (33%). Question forms were also collected by the Association of Numismatists of Ukraine (16%) and e-mailed (6%).

The second stage of the Competition for selecting the best coins of 2017 will be held shortly. Please be reminded that at the second stage members of the special commission will vote on the winner in each category by secret ballot.
