The National Bank of Ukraine has called on the international payment systems Visa and Mastercard to stop servicing payment cards issued by the banks based in the Russian Federation.
This appeal comes after the Ukrainian authorities imposed martial law, and it aims to facilitate measures required to implement martial law pursuant to Presidential Decree No. 64/2022 On Introducing Martial Law in Ukraine dated 24 February 2022.
“The NBU is doing everything in its power to ensure the financial security of the people of Ukraine and to fight Russia’s aggression in finance by every means necessary. We must prevent the provision of financial support for armed aggression against our state through the cards of the international payment systems Visa and Mastercard. I hope that Visa and Mastercard will make a fair decision for the sake of peace in Ukraine,” said NBU Governor Kyrylo Shevchenko.
