The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) decided on the first stage finalists of the Best Coin of the Year Competition (hereinafter – the Competition) for 2018.
The finalists that received the biggest number of votes are the following:
The Best Coin of the Year:
- 100 Years Since the Issuance of the First Ukrainian Postage Stamps (nickel silver, face value UAH 5) – the coin’s designers are: Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, Serhii Kharuk; engraver: Volodymyr Demianenko (9.96% of the total votes)
- Coin set The Centenary of the Establishment of Ukraine’s Academy of Sciences: The Time of Peace, The Time of Changes, The Time of Technologies, The Human, Time, Space (silver, face value UAH 5 (each coin)) – the set’s designers are: Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, Serhii Kharuk; engraver of the coins The Time of Peace and The Time of Changes: Anatolii Demianenko; engraver of the coin The Time of Technologies: Volodymyr Demianenko; engraver of the coin The Human, Time, Space: Volodymyr Atamanchuk; computer-aided design: Vitalii Andriianov (9.34%)
- Digging Up Potatoes (silver, face value UAH 10) – the coin’s designers are: Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, Serhii Kharuk; the coin’s engravers are: Volodymyr Demianenko, Anatolii Demianenko. (9.28%)

- New Year Holidays (nickel silver, face value UAH 5) – the coin’s designer is Liubov Androshchuk; engraver: Volodymyr Atamanchuk; computer-aided design: Vitalii Andriianov (7.49%)
Also, Ukrainians actively voted for the following coins: The Boar (silver), The Dolphin (silver), The Dnieper Barbel (nickel silver), 100 Years since the Establishment of the Ukrainian Red-Cross Society (nickel silver), I Give my Heart to Children (nickel silver), Medzhybizh Castle (silver), Defenders of Donetsk Airport (zinc-based alloy), Ukrainian Volunteer Day (zinc-based alloy), 100 Years since the Creation of the Ukrainian Navy (zinc-based alloy). However, under the Competition rules, these coins failed to qualify for the second stage of the Competition.
For your information, the first stage of the Competition took place between 1 February and 1 April 2019.
More than four thousand people voted in the Competition.
Questionnaires were collected in special boxes installed at the NBU regional offices (15% of the total number of questionnaires), on the premises of distributing banks of the NBU (60%), were collected by the Association of numismatists and collectors of Ukraine (11%), were received via e-mail (14%).
At the second stage of the Competition, which will take place soon, members of the special commission will vote for the best coin of 2018 through secret ballot.
