In response to information circulated by some media outlets regarding a new 1,000 hryvnia bill that has allegedly been printed, the National Bank of Ukraine provides the following information:
The NBU is involved in continuous efforts to upgrade the banknote series and identify the needs of the society and the economy in terms of the availability and adequacy of banknotes. This depends on many factors, including households’ incomes, the level of consumer prices, utilization rate of banknotes of higher denomination in circulation, and the development of cashless payments.
However, prior information on new design banknotes constitutes highly-classified information before the official announcement by the NBU.
Pursuant to applicable laws, the NBU makes an official announcement to this effect only after the NBU Board issues a resolution on putting new design banknotes into circulation[1].

The NBU always informs the public in advance about NBU Board resolutions on putting new design banknotes into circulation and presents their design and security features to the public.
In 2014, the NBU embarked on efforts to upgrade the nominal series of hryvnia banknotes:
- In December 2014, the NBU presented the revamped 2014 design 100 hryvnia bill with with enhanced security features (the banknote was put into circulation three months later – from 9 March 2015).
- In December 2015, the NBU presented the revamped 2015 design 500 hryvnia bill with with enhanced security features (the banknote was put into circulation four months later – from 11 April2016)/
