NBU Issues into Circulation New Commemorative Coin That Celebrates Ukraine’s State Security Directorate

On 29 January 2024, the NBU presented a new commemorative coin entitled Ukraine’s State Security Directorate.

This coin celebrates a special-purpose state law enforcement agency, which plays a special role in safeguarding national security and defending Ukraine.

Servicepersons from Ukraine’s State Security Directorate are vital in ensuring the security of the President of Ukraine, the Ukrainian parliament, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, as well as senior state officials. They also protect high-ranking foreign delegations of Ukraine’s partners that arrive or stay in Ukraine.

The new coin was presented by Oleksii Shaban, Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine, and Major General Serhii Rud, Head of Ukraine’s State Security Directorate.

“For 32 years, since the very beginning of Ukraine’s independence, servicepersons from Ukraine’s State Security Directorate have been highly professionally performing difficult and responsible jobs, demonstrating resilience, endurance, willpower and patriotism, while also adhering to the knightly code of honor and Cossack traditions,” said Shaban. “Protecting others is first and foremost for them. They have dedicated their lives to the Ukrainian state, people, and law. We sincerely thank them and dedicate our new commemorative coin to them.”

He added that in 2023, the NBU put into circulation five commemorative coins that celebrate the heroic deeds of Ukrainian defenders, and that it planned to issue about ten more such coins in 2024.

“For over seven hundred days, Ukraine has been confronting a powerful and strong enemy,” said Rud. “All of us are effectively fighting back against the Russian terrorists. That is why it is so important today to find an opportunity to support the morale of our heroes, to inspire our heroic society, to honor loyalty to the military oath and the Ukrainian people, and to recognize the importance and value of each of them. An instance of this recognition is the creation of a commemorative coin that celebrates Ukraine’s State Security Directorate.”

Coin Design

The obverse of the coin depicts, against a smooth background, the emblem of Ukraine’s State Security Directorate; against a matt background, is the directorate’s motto: ДЕРЖАВІ. НАРОДОВІ. ЗАКОНУ (TO THE STATE. TO THE PEOPLE. TO THE LAW).

The reverse shows a composition that stands for different historical periods in Ukraine and the defense of the state by Ukrainian soldiers, whose courage has remained unchanged through generations: to the left is a stylized trident; in the center is a mace with sabers and a shield decorated with a Cossack cross, which represents power, combat brotherhood and protection; to the right is a fragment of a camera lens that symbolizes modern technologies in safeguarding safety and security.

This coin was designed by artist Oleksandra Kuchynska. Engravers – Volodymyr Demianenko and Anatolii Demianenko.
