The National Bank of Ukraine has selected the best coins for 2016.
Based on the results of the final phase of the annual competition to select the Best Coin of the Year (hereinafter - the Competition) from among the commemorative coins put into circulation by the NBU from 1 January until 31 December 2016, the following coins were named as the winners of this year’s competition:
- in the Best Coin of the Year category” – “Shchedryk” - silver, face value; 20 hryvnias) - designers: Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, Serhii Kharuk. Engravers: Volodymyr Demianenko, Anatolii Demianenko
- in the Unique Concept category – “Ukraine Begins from Yount” (German silver, face value: 5 hryvnias - designers: Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, Serhii Kharuk
- in the Successful Artistic Solution category “Petrykivka Painting” – (German silver, face value: 5 hryvnias) – designer – Nataliia Fandikova; engravers: Volodymyr Atamanchuk, Anatolii Demianenko.
This competition has been held annually since 2005. It is conducted in two stages.
The first phase of the Competition ran from 6 February until 3 April 2017. A total of over 6,000 voters participated in the voting. The questionnaires were accumulated inside the specially designed boxes installed at the NBU’s regional premises (36%) and the premises of banks acting as NBU’s distributors (39%). The Association of Numismatists of Ukraine received 20% of the completed questionnaires. 5% of the completed questionnaires were returned to the NBU via e-mail.
During the second phase of the competition, the Competition jury panel comprising experts from the NBU and the NBU Banknote Printing and Minting Works, members of the Expert Council on commemorative coin design and representatives from numismatic societies selected the winner (coin) in each category by secret ballot.
