Description:
This coin celebrates one of the twelve animals of the Chinese calendar. The Horse is the seventh sign of the Chinese calendar, embodying activity, love of life, independence, endurance, and determination. In traditional Chinese astrology, it belongs to the yang type and is associated with the fire element, which symbolizes dynamism, decisiveness, and a desire for freedom. At the same time, this sign is characterized by impulsiveness, intolerance of restrictions, and a tendency toward risk.
Obverse: above is Ukraine’s small state coat-of-arms, to the right of which is the semicircular legend УКРАЇНА (Ukraine); against a smooth background are the 12 symbols of the Chinese zodiac depicted around a circle; in the center of the circle is a stylized clock with a hand pointing to the horse – the symbol of 2026; above the hand is the legend 2026; beneath, to the left, is the semicircular legend 5 ГРИВЕНЬ (5 hryvnias); against a matt background are the symbols of each season, stylized to resemble a Ukrainian ornament: a snowflake (above), a flower (to the right), a berry (beneath), and a leaf (to the left); the mint mark of the NBU’s Banknote Printing and Minting Works is to the right, above the symbol of the tiger.
Reverse: the symbol of 2026 – a stylized horse – is depicted in the center of the composition, set against the background of a horseshoe, which is traditionally associated with luck and protection. The horse’s mane conveys the dynamism of movement “with the wind” or “against the wind” – as a metaphor for inner strength, resistance, and the aspiration for freedom. Below the central image, three dots are placed, symbolizing the continuation of the struggle. The horse is circled by stylized symbols of each season: snowflakes (above, to the right), flowers (beneath, to the right), fruit (beneath, to the left), and tree branches (above, to the left).
