Description:
This coin celebrates the generation of Ukrainian artists of the 1920s and 1930s who became an engine of cultural change, developing literature, theater, cinema, music, and fine arts, but who were ruthlessly destroyed by the totalitarian regime. An important cultural hub of this era was the Slovo House in Kharkiv, a symbol of creative life and at the same time a place of tragic events. One of the prominent representatives of the Executed Renaissance was Yulian Shpol (real name: Mykhailo Yalovy), a poet, novelist, playwright, and screenwriter. He was one of the leading figures of the literary process in Ukraine, headed the Free Academy of Proletarian Literature (VAPLITE) and wrote the first Ukrainian formalist novel “The Golden Fox Cubs” (1929). Together with Mykola Khvylovy and other creative personalities, he shaped a new Ukrainian culture, free from dogma and restrictions. In 1933, the poet became one of the victims of the Soviet regime, and his name was erased from Ukrainian literature for decades. This commemorative coin continues the theme of the Executed Renaissance, honoring the contribution of Yulian Shpol and all the artists who bravely created and developed Ukrainian culture despite severe oppression.
Obverse: there is a stylized legend СЛОВО (meaning “word” in Ukrainian), the name of the Kharkiv House of Writers of the 1930s. The texture of the letters shows a sprout of winter wheat, an image of the younger generation of artists whose lives and work were cynically destroyed by the totalitarian government. The tragedy of the historical era is emphasized by the shot through the letter “O”, which is bleeding, reminding us of a painful wound in the history of Ukraine and the unfulfilled dreams of talented artists. Under the text composition are the legend УКРАЇНА (Ukraine), the coin’s issue year – 20 / 25, Ukraine’s small coat of arms, the coin’s face value 5, the graphic symbol of the hryvnia, and the mint mark of the NBU’s Banknote Printing and Minting Works.
Reverse: against a smooth background is a stylized portrait of Yulian Shpol, broken by spots of corrosion, oblivion, but not lost completely. To the right of the portrait are the vertical legends: МИХАЙЛО / ЯЛОВИЙ (Mykhailo / Yalovy), the artist’s real name in relief, and ЮЛІАН / ШПОЛ (Yulian / Shpol), the writer’s pseudonym in smooth letters. To the left of the portrait are the years of the artist’s birth and death – 1895 / 1937.
