First phase of the Best Coin of the Year Competition run by the National Bank of Ukraine completed

The National Bank of Ukraine announces the completion of the first phase of the Competition to select the Best Coin of the Year for 2012. All the commemorative coins put into circulation from 1 January till 31 December 2012 were entered in the Competition.

The questionnaire-based voting was held to determine the winners in three categories: “Best Coin of the Year”, “Unique concept” and “Successful Artistic Solution”. More than eight thousand people have participated in the voting. This indicates that the public has a keen interest in the activities of the National Bank of Ukraine and production of commemorative coins.

The completed questionnaires had accumulated inside the specially designed boxes installed at the regional branches of the National Bank of Ukraine, and the premises of banks acting as NBU’s distributors. The Association of Numismatists of Ukraine and the National Bank of Ukraine have also received the completed questionnaires..

The following coins received a majority of the votes from the public:

Nomination “Best Coin of the Year”:

“The Year of the Snake ”, silver, face value: 5 hryvnias;

“Ukrainian Lyric Song”, silver, face value: 10 hryvnias; German silver, face value: 5 hryvnias;

“UEFA EURO 2012TM Poland - Ukraine” (a set of two commemorative coins enclosed in a capsule), silver, face value: 10 hryvnias/10 zloty

Nomination “Unique concept”:

“UEFA EURO 2012TM Poland - Ukraine” (a set of two commemorative coins enclosed in a capsule), silver, face value: 10 hryvnias/10 zloty;

“Ukrainian Lyric Song”, silver, face value: 10 hryvnias; German silver, face value: 5 hryvnias;

“The Year of the Snake”, silver, face value: 5 hryvnias;

Nomination “Successful Artistic Solution”:

“Ukrainian Lyric Song”, silver, face value: 10 hryvnias; German silver, face value: 5 hryvnias;

“The Year of the Snake”, silver, face value: 5 hryvnias;;

“Malva ”, gold, face value: 2 hryvnias.

The second phase of the Competition will be held from 20 till 31 May 2013. The jury panel comprising experts from the National Bank of Ukraine, NBU Banknote Printing and Minting Works, members of the Council of Experts on the issues of commemorative coin design (honored designers, engravers, historians and other experts), and authorized representatives from the Association of Numismatists of Ukraine will select the winner (coin) in each category by secret ballot. Results will be announced at the meeting of the jury panel  and will be posted on the NBU's official website.
