On 15 December 2012, the National Bank of Ukraine put into circulation the commemorative coin of 5 hryvnia face value dedicated to the International Year of the Bat. All 26 species of bats have been entered into the Red Book of Ukraine and are currently protected in accordance with the laws of Ukraine. Chiropterans or bats are the only mammals capable of true flight. These animals play an play a vital role in maintaining the balance of nature and ensuring the sustainability of natural ecosystems.

The coin has been made of German silver, quality – “special uncirculated”, weight – 16.54 g, diameter– 35.0 mm, mintage – 20 000 pieces. The coin edge is grooved.

Obverse: above there is the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine with the semicircular inscription НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine); to the right there is the coin issue year indication 2012; to the left there is the National Bank of Ukraine Mint logo; in the center against the relief background there is a mirror image of the bat; below there is the legend 5/ГРИВЕНЬ (5/hryvnias)

Reverse: there is the symbolic composition – a bat is depicted against the background of a conventionalized image of the earth, to the right thereof there is the semicircular legend ВСЕСВІТНІЙ РІК КАЖАНА (International Year of the Bat).

The commemorative coin of 5 hryvnia face value is a legal tender of Ukraine and shall be accepted without any restrictions at its face value for all types of payments as well as for placing to the settlement accounts, on deposits, for letters of credit and transfers.

On 10 December 2012, the National Bank of Ukraine put into circulation the commemorative coin "Year of the Snake" of 5 hryvnia face value dedicated to the year of the Snake according to the calendar of the Chinese origin based on the twelve-year cycle of the Jupiter.

The coin has been made of silver (925 Ag), quality – "proof", weight in fineness – 15.55 g, diameter – 33.0 mm, mintage – 25 000 pieces. The coin edge is grooved. The decoration element – zirconium oxide 1.25 mm in diameter.
