On 11 January 2013, the National Bank of Ukraine was the setting for an official introduction of newly appointed Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine Mr. Ihor Sorkin. Mykola Azarov, Prime Minister of Ukraine, officially introduced the new Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine to the public and the NBU staff. The ceremonial event was also attended by Mr. Sergiy Arbuzov, First Vice-Prime Minister of Ukraine.

“First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to Mr. Sergiy Arbuzov for his services and the intense and vigorous work that he has carried out at the National Bank of Ukraine, the most important financial institution of our country. He assumed charge as the Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine during the most challenging period and his ability to find a way out of the most difficult situations without experiencing significant shocks is seen as his greatest achievement.  His experience, knowledge, and a strong will enabled him to make a valuable contribution to achieving financial stability and aspire to the top position of First Vice-Prime Minister of Ukraine,” said Mr. Mykola Azarov.

At the same time, Mr. Mykola Azarov called on Mr. Ihor Sorkin to preserve traditions and practices of efficient cooperation between the Government and the National Bank of Ukraine and maintain a level of understanding that has already been reached.

“As long as the President, Government, National Bank of Ukraine and the majority in the Verkhovna Rada coordinate their efforts, the country is unlikely to be subject to any shocks. It is an axiom,” added Mykola Azarov.

Mr. Sergiy Arbuzov, in his turn, expressed confidence that Mr. Ihor Sorkin would seek to continue traditions established at the National Bank of Ukraine over the past twenty years.

“I am handing over the  administration to an expert. This is the person who has dedicated all his life to the National Bank of Ukraine. It is very illustrative. I am glad that the President nominated Mr. Ihor Sorkin as Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine. Let me wish Mr. Ihor V. Sorkin every success in his career as a governor.  I hope he will hold the office for as long as possible and make valuable contributions to the country,” said Mr. Sergiy Arbuzov.

It should be noted that Mr. Ihor Sorkin has worked at the National Bank of Ukraine since 1996. He held the position of Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine from July 2010 until December 2012. Since December 2012 up until now, Mr. Ihor Sorkin has fulfilled the duties of Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine.

“As for me, being Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine means above all responsibility for fulfilling the tasks by the National Bank of Ukraine enshrined in the Constitution and prescribed by the laws of Ukraine, responsibility for public trust placed in the National Bank of Ukraine over the past few years, and responsibility for the banking system’s performance. The NBU staff and I must make every endeavor to ensure a stable life in the country, predictability of the exchange rate of the domestic currency and economic growth,” stressed Mr. Ihor Sorkin. 

As it was reported, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has approved the appointment of Mr. Ihor Sorkin as Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine. Mr. Sorkin's candidature was submitted for consideration of the Verkhovna Rada by President Viktor Yanukovych. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has dismissed Mr. Sergiy Arbuzov from the post of Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine in view of his appointment as First Vice-Prime Minister of Ukraine.

Biographical information

Mr. Ihor V. Sorkin

He was born in the city of Donetsk in 1967. He holds three degrees in higher education. In 1998, Mr. Ihor V. Sorkin graduated from the Donetsk State University where he had studied Law. In 2006, he graduated from the Donetsk National University, having received a degree in Banking. Mr. Ihor V. Sorkin has been awarded the title of the “Honored Economist of Ukraine".

Mr. Ihor V. Sorkin has worked at the National Bank of Ukraine for nearly 16 years now. He launched his career as an economist grade 1 of the Banking Supervision Division of the regional department of the National Bank of Ukraine in Donetsk region where he later held various positions, including leading economist, senior economist, Head of Sector, Deputy Head of Division and from 2001 – Head of the Banking Supervision Division of the regional department of the National Bank of Ukraine in Donetsk region.

In July 2010, Mr. Ihor V. Sorkin was appointed as Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine.

On 11 January 2013, Mr. Ihor V. Sorkin took office as Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine.

He is married and has a son.
