Ukraine’s commemorative coins included in the slate of nominees of the prestigious international numismatic competition

The two commemorative coins of Ukraine minted in 2014 have been included in the slate of nominees of the prestigious international numismatic competition "Coin of the Year".

The Competition is organized by the U.S. publishing house "Krause Publications", which is the most influential in the numismatic community. Every year more than 3 thousand coins from around the world enter the competition. At the first phase of the competition, a panel of judges selects 100 best coins in 10 categories.

Ukraine’s commemorative coins have been nominated in the following categories: Most Historically Significant Coin, – "500 Years of the Battle of Orsha" (German silver, 5 hryvnia coin).

The coins nominated in the category are devoted to the events, institutions or personalities honoured for the significant contribution to the historical heritage of the country and the whole mankind. This category includes coins featuring the events that took place 100 years ago. The artistic realization of an idea is also reviewed.

Most Inspirational Coin – "70th anniversary of Ukraine’s liberation from fascist invaders" (silver, 20 hryvnia coin).

For this category, a panel of judges selects coins devoted to ideas, institutions, and personalities that reflect a spiritual striving to safeguard peace, freedom and human rights. The preference is given to the coins that are unique in themes, design and artistic concept.

At the second phase of a competition that will be held in January 2016, a panel of judges will select the best coin from among the 10 nominees and will announce the best coin in each category.

The National Bank hopes that high minting standards and efforts to produce coins with the highest levels of craftsmanship and design detail will be highly praised by a worldwide panel of judges and will bring a victory to our country in this competition!
