Natural persons' bank accounts account for 98% of the total number of accounts opened by customers

As of 1 July 2013, 176 Ukrainian banks run 194.8 million customers' accounts, including:

140.2 million checking accounts (72.0% of the total number of accounts opened with banks); 

54.6 million savings (deposit) accounts (28.0% of the total number of accounts opened with banks). 

Natural persons' bank accounts amount to approximately 191 million, accounting for 98% of the total number accounts opened by customers, including 136.3 million checking accounts and 54.5 million savings (deposit) accounts.

In the first half of 2013, the total number of accounts opened by natural persons had increased by 11.7 million.

Checking accounts denominated in national currency had surged by 9.3 million.

Checking accounts denominated in foreign currency had edged up by 1.7 million.

Savings (deposit) accounts denominated in national currency had increased by 0.95 million.

On average, every Ukrainian citizen holds 3 bank accounts, including 1 savings (deposit) account. Every working-age citizen holds approximately 7 bank accounts, including 2 savings (deposit) accounts.

As of 1 July 2013, the main components of banks' liabilities were amounts due to natural persons, which amounted to UAH 408.0 billion, including time deposits (UAH 319.8 billion) and demand deposits (UAH 88.2 billion).

In the January to June period, household deposits had increased by UAH 44 billion, with national currency deposits being the main drivers of deposit growth. It is an indication of strong public confidence in hryvnia.
