Today, the NBU hosted journalists on a tour of the Mint and showed how coins are minted at this manufacturing facility.

The event was attended by Director of the NBU Banknote Printing and Minting Works Mr Volodymyr Reshynskyi, Head of the Numismatic Product and Marketing Division of the NBU Cash Circulation Department Ms Tamara Loshmanova, Deputy Head of the Numismatic Product and Marketing Division Ms Viktoriia Suzanska, as well as coin designers Mr Volodymyr Taran and Mr Serhii Kharuk.

During the tour, Mr Reshynskyi told visitors that the Mint is a structural unit of the NBU Banknote Printing and Minting Works that produces coins and state awards.

“Having the Mint in Ukraine gives us an opportunity to engrave the attributes of Ukrainian statehood on coins, establish our own school of numismatic design, and showcase to the international community our advanced manufacturing facilities equipped with hi-tech state-of-the-art technology,” he said. “Before reaching consumers, our products go through a long and complex manufacturing process that starts with creating a design concept and ends with the delivery of a finished product.”

The Mint was put into operation in 1998. The Austrian Mint served as a subcontractor in the construction of our manufacturing facility.

Since being put into operation, to date the Mint has struck about 15 million commemorative coins, almost 10 billion circulation and small coins, manufactured over 9 million pieces of state awards (orders, medals, award pins and accompanying certificates) – more than 73 unique items in total.

The Mint's annual production capacity amounts to approximately 1.2 billion pieces of circulation coins, one million pieces of commemorative coins made from precious and non-precious metals, as well as 200,000 orders and medals,ˮ added Mr Reshynskyi.

The Director of the NBU Banknote Printing and Minting Works said that the gold commemorative coin “Kyiv Psalmbook” (1998) was the first coin to be struck at the Mint.

The Mint began minting small (circulation coins) in late 2000. A one kopiyka coin was the first circulation coin to be struck at the Mint.

Currently, the coin production department is equipped with 17 new high-speed coining presses capable of striking 550 coins per minute.
