On 25 October 2013, the National Bank of Ukraine put the commemorative coins into circulation to honor the memory of the outstanding figures in Ukrainian history and culture.
“The National Bank of Ukraine expands its Outstanding personalities of Ukraine coin series with two new coins devoted to the birth anniversaries of Olha Kobylianska, a renowned Ukrainian authoress, and Nestor Makhno, a military leader. Being contemporaries from different social backgrounds, they enriched Ukrainian history, each in their own way,” said Head of Office for Numismatic Products and Marketing Tamara Loshmanova.
The commemorative coin “Olha Kobylianska” of 2 hryvnia face value has been struck to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of the prominent Ukrainian authoress.
“The authoress explored the issues related to the women's rights, including their right to education and actively advocated social equality of women and men. Her works give aesthetic pleasure and provide an insight into the feminine nature,” said Tamara Loshmanova.
The coin “Olha Kobylianska” is made of German silver, quality – “special uncirculated”. The mintage quantity is 20,000 pieces. The coin edge is grooved. Designer and engraver – Sviatoslav Ivanenko.
The commemorative coin “Nestor Makhno” of 2 hryvnia face value has been struck on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Nestor Makhno, the leader of peasant insurrectional movement in the south of Ukraine, who epitomizes a folk hero who sprang from the loins of revolution.
The coin “Nestor Makhno” is made of German silver, quality – “special uncirculated”. The mintage quantity is 30,000 pieces. The coin edge is grooved. Designers: Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, Serhii Kharuk, Nataliia Fandikova. Engravers: Volodymyr Demianenko, Anatolii Demianenko.
