More and More Ukrainians Prefer Cashless Payments

For nine months of 2016, Ukrainians carried out cashless payments for the amount larger than for the whole past year.

Also, in Q3 2016 a part of cashless payments in total amount of transactions involving payment cards continued to grow.

This indicator increased to 35.8% compared to 34.9% in Q2 of current year.

So, in Q3 2016 459 million of cashless payments via payment cards for the total amount of UAH 149.5 billion that is UAH 16.56 billion more compared with Q2 of this year.

Cashless payments via payment cards in Q3 are distributed in the following way:

  • 35.9% - transactions via payment terminals;
  • 33.1% - card-to-card payments;
  • 27.8% transactions via Internet;
  • 3.2% made transactions in self-service devices.

Generally, for nine months of 2016 over 70% of general amount of transactions via payment cards were cashless. In total, 1272 million cashless payments were made via payment cards for the amount of UAH 398 billion. Only 30% of the total amount of transactions via payment cards represented cash withdrawal (543 million transactions for the total amount of UAH 732 billion).

Based on results of nine months, there are over 31.1 million active payment cards in Ukraine this year (early 2016 - 30.8 million active payment cards).

Uptrends in amount of contactless payment cards in Ukraine remains stable. From the beginning of the year, their amount increased to 1.8 million pieces.

Infrastructure of payment instruments usage of 1 October 2016 comprises almost 33.5 ATMs and 207.3 thousand terminals (of 1 January 2016 - 33.3 thousand ATM and 194.5 thousand terminals). The majority of ATMs and terminals is installed in Kyiv region (including Kyiv), Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv regions. CB PRIVATBANK PJSC, Oschadbank JSC and Raiffeisen Bank Aval PJSC are leading among Ukrainian banks by number of ATMs and terminals.

Amount of trade and services enterprises, which give an opportunity to perform cashless settlements, compared to early 2016 also increased by almost 6% - up to 139 thousand (the majority is located in Kyiv region including Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv regions). 

Please note that in 2015 part of cashless payments via payment cards in Ukraine grew up to 31% compared to 8% in 2011. The strategic aim of the National Bank of Ukraine in development of domestic banking sector is to implement project Cashless Economy and lowering the amount of cash in circulation to 9.5% to GDP in 2020 (in 2014 this indicator made 18.1%, in 2015 - 15.6%).
