The Public Board of the NBU Council Becomes Operational

Yesterday, on 1 December 2016, the Public  Board of the NBU Council (hereinafter -  the Public Board) held its first meeting. Discussions at the meeting were focused on the draft Monetary Policy Guidelines for 2017.  The meeting's agenda also included the Public Board’s organizational and staffing issues.

In opening the meeting, Chairman of the NBU Council Mr Bohdan Danylyshyn said: “We have initiated a discussion on this key document on monetary policy. Your opinion is very important for the NBU Council. I would like to ask you to go through the Draft Monetary Policy Guidelines for 2017 and submit your proposals to our office. We will definitely take into account public opinion as our decisions must be understandable to the public”. In their turn, members of the Public Board have agreed to submit within two weeks their comments and proposals to the draft Monetary Policy Guidelines for 2017 to the NBU Council.

The meeting participants were greeted by First Deputy Governor of the NBU Mr Yakiv Smolii. Mr Smolii said that the NBU has entered a new phase in its operation with the NBU Council becoming fully operational.  Today, the Public Board has become operational. We have  launched a discussion on the draft Monetary Policy Guidelines for 2017. Your opinion about the NBU’s future monetary policy is very important for us.”

The Public Board of the NBU Council is a standing collegial advisory body established to maintain a dialogue with the public while addressing issues related to ensuring the banking system and currency stability, the protection of the rights and interests of financial services consumers and submitting proposals to the NBU Council regarding the fulfilment by the latter of its duties. The Public Board was set up as a successor to the NBU Public Council, but with a broader mandate. Mr Stanislav Arzhevitin, former Chairman of the Public Council, became Chairman of the Public Board.

Today’s meeting was held with the participation of Chairman of the NBU Council Mr Bohdan Danylyshyn and member of the NBU Council Mr Vasyl Furman.
