The National Bank of Ukraine to Hold Its First Open Research Seminar in 2017

The first Open Research seminar with the participation of world-class scholars and NBU representatives is to take place on 27 January 2017 at 11.00 a.m.

Dr. Tor Jacobson, Acting Head of Research at Sveriges Riksbank, will present the findings of his research entitled: Curbing Shocks to Corporate Liquidity: The Role of Trade Credit”.

In his research conducted jointly with his colleagues, Dr. Tor Jacobson investigates how trade credit positions are used by firms to curb the impacts of shortfalls in liquidity. Exogenous liquidity shortfalls generated by the fraud and failure of a cash-in-transit firm provide an opportunity to show a causal effect on the role of trade credit. The research findings suggest that firms can manage liquidity shortfalls by increasing the amount of drawn credit from suppliers (payables), and by decreasing the amount of issued credit to suppliers (receivables). The authors argue that trade credit positions are economically important sources of reserve liquidity and the underlying mechanism in trade credit adjustments is in part due to shifts in credit durations—both upstream and downstream.
