National Bank of Ukraine rounds up the year 2013 by putting the “1120 Years of the City of Uzhhorod” commemorative coins into circulation

On 25 December, 2013, the National Bank of Ukraine put the “1120 Years of the City of Uzhhorod” commemorative coins.

“At the end of 2013, we put into circulation the “1120 Years of the City of Uzhhorod” commemorative coins of 10 and 5 hryvna face value that have traditionally been made of silver and German silver respectively,” informed Head of Numismatic Production and Marketing Department of the National Bank of Ukraine Tamara Loshmanova.

She said that the “1120 Years of the City of Uzhhorod” commemorative coins belong to the “Ancient Cities of Ukraine” coin series and are dedicated Uzhhorod, a picturesque city situated on both banks of the Uzh River which emerged as a fortress and has witnessed many historical events in Zakarpattia.

 “To our opinion, this coins have interesting and special artistic solution, that is even romantic. Both sides, the obverse and reverse, bear branches of the Japanese cherry. It is because the biggest Japanese cherry alley of Europe is located in Uzhgorod”, – said Ms Tamara Loshmanova. She added that sakura (Japanese cherry tree) was transported to Uzhgorod from Vienna in 1923 and now these trees beautify the banks of the Uzh River and the administrative center of the Zakarpattia Oblast.

The coin of 10 hryvnia face value  is made from 925-fine silver, weight in fineness – 31.1g, quality – “proof”, mintage – 2, 000 pieces. The coin edge is smooth with incised legends: the indication of metal and its fineness.

The coin of 5 hryvnia face value  is made from German silver, quality − “special uncirculated”, mintage – 30, 000 pieces. The coin edge is grooved.

The “1120 Years of the City of Uzhhorod” commemorative coins are available for sale at the regional branches of the National Bank of Ukraine and the National Bank of Ukraine’s distributors selling commemorative coins. The silver coin packaged in a presentation case is priced at UAH 565, the coin made from German silver – UAH 25..

The coins have been created by Oleksandr Kuzmin and Mariia Skoblikova (designers), and Volodymyr Demianenko and Volodymyr Atamanchuk (engravers).

During 2013, the National Bank of Ukraine put into circulation 42 types (29 names) of commemorative coins, with the mintage totaling 650, 000 pieces.

All commemorative coins are a legal tender of Ukraine and shall be accepted without any restrictions at their face values for all types of payments as well as for placing to the settlement accounts, on deposits, for letters of credit and transfers.
