Announcement: Open Research Seminar on Blockchain and Mining

On 28 March 2019, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) will host an open research seminar during which Professor Tymofii Mylovanov will discuss the functioning of blockchain technology and the future of mining.

During the seminar, Mr Mylovanov will present a paper he co-authored with Rakesh Vohra of the University of Pennsylvania that proposes a blockchain model that predicts how high mining rewards and high entry costs affect miners’ behavior. The speaker will also talk about the regulatory implications of the paper’s results with regard to mining and blockchain technology.

This topic is particularly important for the further development of the financial market in Ukraine, as the country lacks a clear-cut regulatory framework for such cutting-edge technologies despite debates on blockchain and mining being in full swing.

Tymofii Mylovanov is Deputy Chairman of the NBU Council, KSE Honorary President, and a Professor at the University of Pittsburgh. Mr Mylovanov holds a PhD from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research on game theory, contract theory, and institutional design has been published in major international academic journals like the Review of Economic Studies and the Journal of Economic Theory. Mr Mylovanov is also a cofounder of VoxUkraine, a group of global economists working on policy problems in Ukraine.

The research papers are available at the link.

The seminar will be held in English.

Location: National Bank of Ukraine, 9, Instytutska St., Kyiv, Room 306. Please use the NBU’s central entrance to access the venue.

The seminar will start at 3:30 p.m. The registration of participants will take place from 3:15 to 3:25 p.m. The NBU is a restricted access facility, and a photo identification is required to be admitted.

To participate in the seminar, please submit an application containing your first name, last name, place of employment, and contact details (telephone, e-mail) to [email protected]. Applications must be submitted by 2 p.m. on 27 March 2019. A limited number of slots are available, and the NBU reserves the right to accept or reject applications. Applicants will be notified via email whether their application has been accepted.

The NBU launched open research seminars in July 2015. These seminars provide an opportunity to representatives of the academic and expert community, international financial institutions, other central banks, and the NBU to share their research findings and discuss them with peers.

The NBU invites researchers to participate in the NBU’s research seminars to present their findings on issues related to the NBU’s activities and the operation of the financial system. Email your proposals (along with a desired seminar date, presentation materials, an executive summary, and/or draft contributions) to the NBU Research Division of the Monetary Policy and Economic Analysis Department (email: [email protected]).

The materials of previous open research seminars are available here.
