Scholars to discuss the nature and causes of inflation at the next research seminar

The next open research seminar “Understanding Inflation in India” is to take place at the National Bank of Ukraine on May 17, 2017 at 2 p.m. Prof. Laurence Ball from Johns Hopkins University will present the results of joint research with Anusha Chari and Prachi Mishra on inflation dynamics in India. Prof. Ball will discuss the factors driving inflation fluctuations and show the distinction between headline and core inflation. In their study authors explain core inflation with a Phillips curve in which the inflation rate depends on a slow-moving average of past inflation and on the deviation of output from trend. Headline inflation in turn is argued to be more volatile than core. Prof. Ball will speak on the contribution of the large changes in the relative prices of certain industries to the inflation process. Special attention will be paid by prof. Ball to the dynamic interactions among core inflation, headline inflation, and supply shocks.

Representatives of academic and expert communities are welcome to discuss the inflation issues and effective policies to control inflation in emerging markets.
