On 15 November 2024, the Taras Shevchenko National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater of Ukraine hosted an official presentation of the new commemorative coin "100 Years since the Establishment of Radio Ukraine," which is dedicated to the centenary of Radio Ukraine.
The new coin was presented by Oleksii Shaban, NBU Deputy Governor, Denys Shmyhal, Prime Minister of Ukraine, Mykola Tochytskyi, Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine, Mykola Chernotytskyi, Chairman of the Suspilne Movlennia Media Company, and Ihor Smilianskyi, CEO of Ukrposhta.
After the presentation of the coin, the participants of the event franked the postage stamp "A New Century of Radio Ukraine," which was issued by Ukrposhta on the occasion of the centenary of the radio station.
"Throughout its history, Radio Ukraine has gone through various periods, including repression, World War II, and the proclamation of Ukraine’s independence in 1991," said Shaban. "But under any circumstances, radio programs continued to be broadcast in Ukrainian. Today, in the face of russian aggression, Radio Ukraine plays an important role in informing the public, reaching every corner of Ukraine and helping to defend national identity and counteract enemy propaganda. That’s why the NBU decided to dedicate this coin to the oldest broadcaster in Ukraine, which has gained the trust of generations of listeners and has become a true strategic broadcaster, a reliable source of information and a planform that unites, informs, entertains, educates and consolidates Ukrainians both inside and outside the country."
Coin Design
Obverse: in the center of the composition is Ukraine’s small coat of arms, on the right of which are concentric semicircles of the repeated phrase ГОВОРИТЬ КИЇВ (Kyiv speaking), emphasizing the historical and contemporary role of Kyiv as a communications center. This element also depicts a stylized fragment of the contact line and the propagation of radio waves over the occupied territories, symbolizing the importance of Radio Ukraine in defending national identity and countering enemy propaganda. Above is the legend УКРАЇНА (Ukraine), to the left of which are the coin’s face value 5, the graphic symbol of the hryvnia ₴ (placed horizontally) and the coin’s issue year – 2024 (placed vertically); under this composition is the mint mark of the NBU’s Banknote Printing and Minting Works.
Reverse: there is a stylized depiction of the propagation of radio waves, the source of which is the dot above the Ukrainian letter "i" in the Ukrainian word "радіо" (radio). This letter is depicted as a kind of mast, which symbolizes the identification of Radio Ukraine. Below the composition is the legend УКРАЇНСЬКЕ / РАДІО 1924 (Radio / Ukraine 1924), which stands for the year when the largest radio network in Ukraine was founded.
