NBU Council Appoints Oleksii Shaban as Deputy Governor

On 7 August 2020, the Council of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU Council) appointed Oleksii Shaban Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU). In this capacity, he will be in charge of payment systems and cash circulation areas.

The NBU Council appointed Oleksii Shaban to this position after NBU Governor Kyrylo Shevchenko nominated him.

"Oleksii Shaban is experienced and knowledgeable.  He is the best candidate, considering his employment record at the NBU and at a large systemic bank with the most branched-out infrastructure, as well as his understanding of the real needs of the financial sector’s participants. I’m certain that he will contribute to the regulator’s achievements in developing noncash settlements and innovations in the financial sector, as well as to improving the accessibility of financial services for the general public in Ukraine," noted the Governor.

For reference

Since February 2020, Oleksii Shaban had been Director of NBU Payment Systems and Innovative Development Department. In particular, during that period the central bank managed:

  • to introduce an almost round-the-clock operation (23/7) of the System of Electronic Payments (SEP)
  • to build the foundation for the development of fintech by drawing-up and approving the Fintech Development Strategy in Ukraine for 2025.

Before working for the NBU, Oleksii Shaban worked at PrivatBank for over 24 years. In 2018, he was appointed to serve on PrivatBank’s Board as a member responsible for retail business. Since then and until becoming a part of the NBU, Oleksii Shaban was in charge of retail business, and he actively introduced new card and payment products, including through remote channels.

In 1995, Oleksii Shaban graduated from the National Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine, with a major in Management of Enterprises.
