Description:
This coin celebrates the prominent Ukrainian choral conductor, composer, ethnographer, and educator, Oleksandr Koshyts (1875–1944), who played a key role in popularizing Ukrainian musical culture on the international stage. The coin honors the creative legacy of the artist who, at the invitation of Symon Petliura, head of the Directorate of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, led the Ukrainian Republican Choir. From 1919 to 1924, under Koshyts’s direction, the choir toured 17 countries, giving over 600 concerts. It was during this tour that the world first heard “Shchedryk” by Mykola Leontovych, a piece that would later become the globally famous Christmas hit, “The Carol of the Bells.”
Obverse: there is a composition symbolizing the Ukrainian Republican Choir’s international tour led by Oleksandr Koshyts. Against a matte background, a stylized map of the tour route is depicted, with the names of the cities where the choir performed. Between the city names are silhouettes of swallows – a metaphor for spiritual flight, free movement, and the global spread of Ukrainian art. Against a smooth background are the legend УКРАЇНА (Ukraine), the coin’s issue year 20 / 25, Ukraine’s small state coat-of-arms, the coin’s face value 2 and the graphic symbol of the hryvnia ?. Beneath, to the left, is the mint mark of the NBU’s Banknote Printing and Minting Works.
Reverse: in the center of the composition is a stylized portrait of Koshyts in a tailcoat. Special attention is given to the depiction of the artist’s hands – the conductor’s primary “instrument” and means of emotional expression. The background is a wavy, dynamic surface that radiates from the coat-of-arms of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, symbolizing the spread of Ukrainian culture throughout the world thanks to the choir’s tour. To the left, against a smooth background, are the legend ОЛЕКСАНДР / КОШИЦЬ (Oleksandr / Koshyts) and the years of his birth and death 1875 / 1944.
