Coming Up: Open Research Seminar on Product Quality and Price Setting

On 19 June 2019, the National Bank of Ukraine will host an open research seminar, during which Professor Oleksandr Talavera will discuss the impact of product quality on price setting behavior in online markets.

During the seminar, Mr Talavera will present the paper entitled The Quality of Goods and Price Setting that he co-authored with Yuriy Gorodnichenko of the University of California, Berkeley, and Nam Vu of the University of Birmingham. Using a dataset of monthly computer processor prices in the US online-market over April 2009 – December 2012, the authors determine the relationship between the quality of products and price flexibility. They also develop a quality-adjusted price index that shows the deflation of computer processor prices in the United States.

Oleksandr Talavera is a financial economics professor at the University of Birmingham. He holds a PhD in economics from the European University Viadrina. Mr Talavera is a Visiting Scholar at the National Bank of Ukraine, supported by the Canada-IMF Technical Assistance Project "NBU Institutional Capacity Building". He is broadly interested in online prices, big data analytics, banking, international finance, empirical corporate finance, and emerging market economies.

The seminar will be held in English.

Venue: National Bank of Ukraine, 9, Instytutska St., Kyiv, room 218. Please use the NBU’s central entrance to access the venue.

The seminar starts at 2:00 p.m. The registration of participants will take place from 1:45 to 1:55 p.m. The NBU is a restricted access facility, and a photo ID is required to be admitted.

To participate in the seminar, please email an application stating your first name, last name, place of employment, and contact details (telephone, e-mail) to [email protected]. The NBU launched open research seminars in July 2015. These seminars provide representatives of the academic and expert community, international financial institutions, the NBU and other central banks with the opportunity to share their research findings and discuss them with their peers.

The NBU invites researchers to participate in its research seminars on issues related to the NBU’s activities and the operation of the financial system. In order to take part, email your proposals (along with the desired seminar date, presentation materials, an executive summary, and/or draft contributions) to the NBU Research Division of the Monetary Policy and Economic Analysis Department (email: [email protected]).

The materials of previous open research seminars are available here.
