To mark the 33rd anniversary of Ukraine’ s independence, the National Bank of Ukraine has issued modified hryvnia banknotes bearing the slogan of modern Ukraine: "GLORY TO UKRAINE! GLORY TO THE HEROES!".
"The hryvnia, along with other state symbols, is an attribute that defines an independent state," said Andriy Pyshnyy, Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine. "Money is not just a means of payment or a measure of value. These are symbols of the state that each of us holds in their hands every day. Therefore, paying tribute to the invincibility of Ukrainians, capturing this turning point in the birth of the Ukrainian nation, during which we are living today, we have added our slogan, which is heard around the world, to all banknotes."
When will the modified banknotes go into circulation?
The NBU will gradually put the modified banknotes into circulation according to a planned issue schedule:
- from 8 August 2024 – in denominations of UAH 500 and UAH 1000
- from 23 August 2024 – in denominations of UAH 50 and
- in the following years – in denominations of UAH 20, 100 and 200.
The NBU will provide banks and CIT companies with the modified banknotes from the date of their introduction into circulation for further distribution to customers.
The modified banknotes will be in circulation as legal tender together with other banknotes of the corresponding denominations of previous years of issue, and are obligatory for acceptance at their face value by all individuals and legal entities, without any restrictions throughout Ukraine, for all types of payments and crediting to accounts.
Ukrainians will not be required to exchange old banknotes.
The modified banknotes will be issued as part of a planned issue to replace worn and damaged banknotes to ensure that the necessary amount of cash in the respective denominations is in circulation, and to improve the quality of the cash in circulation.
The modified hryvnia banknotes will gradually replace the 2014–2019 design banknotes that are showing signs of wear and tear.
What is the design of the modified banknotes?
In the upper right part of the back of the modified banknotes is the patriotic slogan: "GLORY TO UKRAINE! GLORY TO THE HEROES!"
All the other design and security features of the modified banknotes correspond to the 2015 design 500 hryvnia, 2019 design 1,000 hryvnia and 2019 design 50 hryvnia banknotes. Images and descriptions of these banknotes are available on the official website of the National Bank of Ukraine.
In addition, the front of the modified banknotes bears the signature of the Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine Andriy Pyshnyy, while the back features the year of issue.
