U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Strongly Supports the NBU Governor’s Efforts to Clean Up Ukraine's Banking Sector

Today, NBU Governor Ms Valeria Gontareva held a working meeting with U.S. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Ukraine, Ms Marie Yovanovitch.

The leaders discussed the current status of financial sector reforms, the central bank’s contribution to reform efforts, and the macroeconomic situation in Ukraine, as well as the further steps to be taken by the NBU to restore lending and ease FX restrictions.

“We strongly support the NBU Governor’s efforts to clean up Ukraine's banking sector. Ukraine requires a well-functioning banking system capable of financing businesses, which would enable the country to unleash its full potential and take its rightful place among prosperous EU countries,” said Ms Yovanovitch.

In turn, Ms Gontareva thanked the U.S. Ambassador for comprehensive support, reaffirming the NBU’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations under the Memorandum of Economic and Financial Policies with the IMF.

“Under no circumstances will the central bank succumb to pressure and turn away from the financial sector reform path. In 2014, the country's future was put at stake by an external enemy. Nonetheless, we have withstood these challenges and made good progress in restoring macroeconomic stability. However, an internal enemy – some Ukrainian populist politicians and business representatives – are currently making attempts to undermine this stability. The NBU’s team will not allow populism to return Ukraine’s economy to the dark era of the nineties,” said Ms Gontareva.
