NBU Reinforces Ukraine’s Financial Defense Jointly with International Partners

On 1 March 2022, NBU Governor Kyrylo Shevchenko met with Stefan Ingves, Governor of Sveriges Riksbank. NBU Deputy Governor Sergiy Nikolaychuk and Deputy Governor of Sveriges Riksbank Anna Breman joined the meeting.

The parties discussed the measures already taken by the NBU to ensure that Ukraine’s financial system continues to operate properly while under martial law. The NBU leadership also asked Swedish colleagues to support efforts to counteract Russian aggression in the area of finance.

As previously reported, the NBU has called on international payment systems (Visa, Mastercard) to suspend all payment cards issued by Russian banks. The NBU has also urged the ambassadors and heads of G7 central banks, EU banks that supply cash, and representatives of Western Union to stop the delivery of cash foreign currency to Russian and Belarusian banks. Also the NBU has urged them multiple times to completely disconnect the Russian Federation from SWIFT.

The leadership of Sveriges Riksbank has expressed its support and willingness to assist the Ukrainian central bank in line with the decisions and measures taken by EU, US and the Swedish government. We appreciate the support of our international partners highly.
