Student Team Registration for NBU University Challenge 2020 Starts

The National Bank of Ukraine (the NBU) invites young people to take part in a student championship entitled Monetary Policy: NBU University Challenge.

The NBU holds this competition to deepen students’ practical understanding of its monetary policy’s role in the development of Ukraine’s economy.  For students, it is a unique opportunity to become advisors to the NBU Board for a certain period of time and immerse themselves in the monetary policy decision-making process.

Student team registration for the championship will last until 28 September

An introductory online session for members of registered teams will take place on 2 October. NBU experts will give lectures on modern methods of macroeconomic analysis and specifics of decision-making in the field of monetary policy.

Registered teams will compete by preparing presentations with proposed solutions to monetary policy issues. In their presentations, the NBU University Challenge participants will have to answer the question "What is the optimal key policy rate for the current and expected states of the economy and why?". The deadline for submitting presentations is 20 October, the day before the NBU Monetary Policy Committee meets to decide on the key policy rate.

During the final stage of the contest on 20 November, the three strongest teams will have to defend their projects. NBU Monetary Policy Committee members and market experts will evaluate the participants’ presentations. The finalists and winners of the championship will receive prizes and invitations to intern with the NBU. The winning team will be awarded the Cup of the NBU Governor.

"I truly hope that participation in the NBU University Challenge will increase the interest of Ukrainian students in studying the specifics of Ukraine’s economy and the role of the central bank in ensuring financial and price stability in the country. After all, young professionals are extremely important for a successful economic future of our country. I wish all the participants success and interesting activities during the preparation of competitive projects," NBU Governor Kyrylo Shevchenko said in his address to prospective participants.

Please be reminded that last year more than 200 students and over 40 professors took part in the NBU University Challenge 2019. They represented 42 teams from 26 universities, 12 regions, and Kyiv. Working in a team, the students, together with their mentors, analyzed and forecast development trends of the domestic economy, and developed proposals for the use of monetary instruments.

Detailed information about the terms and conditions of participation and the main stages of the championship is provided on the NBU University Challenge landing page.
