Yakiv Smolii Says the Export Capacity of the Banknote Paper Mill Proves Its Successful Development

Over the past two years, the Banknote Paper Mill has produced and exported over 1,600 tons of high-security banknote paper. This manufacturing facility  has fulfilled orders from over 15 countries around the world.

Following the complete overhaul and upgrading, this high-tech and cutting-edge manufacturing facility has capacity to produce over 3, 500 tons of banknote and high-security paper. The range of products includes 50 types of paper.

Since being put into operation, this manufacturing facility  has produced 33,000 tons of high-security paper.

I am confident that by using the Ukrainian flax fiber to manufacture banknote paper, the Banknote Paper Mill has made a significant contribution   to the historical development of the hryvnia. This move not only  has enhanced the strength and durability of modern hryvnia by 5-10%, but also enabled the Banknote Paper Mill to reduce production costs, said NBU First Deputy Governor Mr Yakiv Smollii on the occasion of the 20th anniversary since the Banknote Paper Mill was commissioned.

This  innovative technology was applied to manufacture the 20 hryvnia commemorative banknote celebrating the 160th anniversary of the birth of Ivan Franko, a prominent Ukrainian writer, which was put into circulation in September 2016/

The technological capabilities of the Banknote Paper Mill are at par with the world's leading banknote paper manufacturers. The technology  deployed by the manufacturing facility  fully meets the requirements set by the NBU and potential customers.

The products incorporating RAPID security thread of 4-6mm width were first produced at the  Banknote Paper Mill.

As the banknote paper is being made, up to ten security features are embedded in it. These  include advanced security features, both visually recognizable security features and machine-readable ones.

Security features embedded into the banknote paper are unlikely to be reproduced  by printing method, thus adding value to the banknotes.

The  highly qualified staff of the factory comply with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 international standards, enabling them to  ensure a customized approach and the proper execution of orders, as well as to deliver high-quality and environmentally-friendly products.

Last year’s integration of the Banknote Paper Mill with the production capabilities of the Banknote Printing and Minting Works will help enhance the competitiveness of the products of the NBU’s  manufacturing units and boost its export potential.
