In 2022, Over UAH 22.3 Billion Transferred for Needs of Defense from Special Account Opened by NBU

In 2022, over UAH 22.3 billion was transferred for needs of defense and over UAH 920 million as humanitarian aid from the relevant special accounts opened by the National Bank of Ukraine.

Special account for the needs of defense

Last year, an equivalent of more than UAH 23.5 billion (over UAH 1 billion in December) has been transferred to the special account the NBU opened on 24 February 2022 to support the defence forces of Ukraine. That includes the equivalent of almost UAH 7.9 billion that has been remitted from abroad in foreign currencies (U.S. Dollars, euros, GB pounds, Canadian dollars, Chinese renminbi, Japanese yen, Swiss francs, Polish zlotys, Australian dollars).

Money has been coming in from individuals and businesses of Ukraine and from all over the international community (including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Switzerland, Norway, Australia, France, Canada, Bulgaria, Hong Kong, and many other countries).

As of 2 January 2023, the special account balance amounted to over UAH 1.1 billion. 

In 2022, the NBU allocated over UAH 22.3 billion  (over UAH 601 million in December) to meet the needs of the defense, in particular:

  • a total of UAH 990 million for the National Guard of Ukraine (UAH 450 million on 26 February 2022, UAH 500 million on 6 March 2022, UAH 40 million on 11 November 2022)  
  • a total of UAH 1,650 million for the National Police of Ukraine (UAH 150 million on 28 February 2022, UAH 700 million on 3 March 2022, UAH 800 million on 6 March 2022)

  • a total of UAH 3.8 billion for the State Service of Special Communication and Information Protection of Ukraine (UAH 252 million on 1 June 2022; UAH  85.5 million on 15 June 2022; UAH 24.3 million on 21 June 2022; UAH 329.1 million on 4 July 2022; UAH 49 million on 8 July 2022; UAH 34.4 million on 19 July 2022; UAH 137.9 million on 25 July 2022; UAH 675.8 million on 10 August 2022; UAH 650.9 million on 5 September 2022; UAH 541.6 million on 19 September 2022; UAH 521,1 million on 28 October 2022;UAH 154 million on 24 November 2022; UAH  183.3 million on 28 November 2022; UAH 57.1 million on 15 December 2022; UAH 133.9 million on 30 December 2022)
  • a total of UAH 19.3 million for the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (UAH 18.3 million on 8 June 2022; UAH 1.1 million on 18 November 2022)
  • a total of UAH 40.5 million for the NSDC of Ukraine (UAH  40.5 million on 19 October 2022)
  • a total of UAH 67 million for the State Special Transport Service (UAH 67 million on 3 November 2022).
  • a total of UAH 90 million for the Security Service of Ukraine (UAH 90 million on 2 December 2022).

It is worth noting that donations for the defense needs can be made by either bank transfer or by card: https://bank.gov.ua/en/about/support-the-armed-forces.

Special account for humanitarian needs

In 2022, an equivalent of more than UAH 920 million (over UAH 98 million in December) has been transferred to the special account of the Ministry of Social Policy the NBU opened for humanitarian aid. About half of the amount donated has come into this account from outside Ukraine in foreign currencies (U.S. dollars, euros, GB pounds).

The Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine, which is both the recipient and administrator of the funds credited to this account, has already transferred over UAH 845 million for humanitarian aid to the victims of russia’s armed aggression.

As of 2 January 2023, the balance in the special account of the Ministry of Social Policy was over UAH 74 million.
